22nd Nov 2022
Winter is a wonderful time of year that can be filled with snowy walks through the forest and starlit strolls though town. However, when your dogs' paws hurt it makes winter a whole lot more miserable! Salt, ice, cold, and snowballs accumulating in the paw pads can cause your dog to limp, and for a good reason too - It can be quite painful! Keep reading to learn how to make winter fun again.
Muttluks Dog Boots
Boots are the easiest way to deal with all of the above problems. They provide maximum warmth and protection for feet and when you take them off all of the dirt and slush gets left at the door with minimal clean-up. Muttluks boots are fleece lined on the inside for maximum insulation and made of suede soles that are both durable and easy to clean.
One of the biggest complaints about dog boots is that they fall off. A large part of this is because people tend to buy boots that are too large for their dogs feet because they are easier to get on when the opening is wider. Boots should just barely fit your dogs feet, similar to your own shoes! While they can be a challenge to put on at first, most people and dogs get the hang of it within a week or so with every day use and enjoy them for the rest of the season. The suede sole tends to mold itself to your dogs feet and offers a perfect fit the more you use them.
Use the Muttluks Sizing Guide HERE to find the best fit. If your dog is struggling with boots falling off in very deep snow, check out the new Muttluks Gators HERE that provide an additional level of security for those extra adventurous dogs.

Musher's Secret Paw Wax
Some dogs just refuse to wear boots or dislike having their paws handled, the Musher's Secret can be a great alternative! Because wax keeps it's form as a semi-solid in cold weather, it provides an excellent barrier to repel cold, salt, and snow. Simply apply it generously to the paw pads, making sure you get in between the toes as well to prevent snowballs from forming. For most dogs, after an hour or so the wax will start to wear off and will be absorbed into the skin as a moisturizer as the dogs paws warm it up. When you get back from your walk simply wipe off the dogs feet and voila! Your dogs feet are protected and as a bonus are getting moisturized.
The Musher's Secret is great for additional uses too! It helps heal cracks in paw pads and dry noses all year round. It is made with all natural ingredients and is safe to ingest. It smells great too!

Soaker Paw Towel
While the Paw Towel doesn't protect the paws, it does a very important job of cleaning any harmful chemicals from your dogs' feet after walks. Things like salt and anti-freeze can cause major issues if ingested! We recommend keeping a damp paw towel by the door to wipe off paws when they come back inside. What makes our Paw Towels so great? They have a corner tab for hanging by the door, they are incredibly absorbent, are easy to clean and are incredibly durable. Our towels made from the same material are loved by grooming shops around the world.
For long-haired dogs, you can use a Soaker Shammy to clean their underbelly or you can use a coat to prevent them from getting mucky in the first place!
